Health classes explained
The categories—Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard—explained: what they mean and what determines your placement.
Underwriters set the cost of term life using rate class tiers. Though names shift between companies, the ordering remains the same: Preferred Plus (sometimes Super Preferred or Preferred Elite), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, then table add-ons for elevated risk. Smokers/users have matching tiers with higher premiums.
What underwriters look at
Body measurements and weight, blood pressure and cholesterol readings, family medical history (especially heart disease or cancer under 60), driving history, medication list, line of work, pastimes, and any nicotine or tobacco products. Perfect ratings in virtually all categories earn the top class; Preferred permits minor deviations; Standard Plus and Standard permit manageable issues such as treated high blood pressure.
How to use the quote tool
You'll describe your health truthfully: Excellent corresponds to Preferred Plus, Very good to Preferred, Good to Standard Plus, and Average to Standard. Quotes are based on that level; underwriters will verify it after application review. Don't know? Quote both your expected tier and one lower, compare, and let the formal application sort it out. Guessing upward on health won't get you a lower final rate—only an inaccurate estimate.
Susman Insurance Agency can help identify insurers with approvals that work well for your medical background—sometimes that matters more than advertised rates.
